Religion

Religion is a cultural phenomenon. We have all of these little sections of Human Beings all over the World...different climates, different animals, different views of the sky, and amongst all of this sensual input, we have what we call higher-order thought processes. Because of this, we can conceive of the idea of "unknown". The mere fact that we looked at the stars once, and we said "huh?"...is evidence of this quality.

We are also Social Animals, naturally defer to hierarchy, and we have a sense of individual "Self". We take A) our sense of "unknown" B) our thirst to explain the "unknown" C) our deference to hierarchy, and D) our sense of individual self to create religion. We explain the unknown by having someone that we defer to personify it by giving it a name and a personality, and a concept of "good" or "bad". That is generally defined by the person that we hold in deference...the Hoozit of the Highest Magnitude. And he defines "bad" by "not being us".

Unfortunately, the Hoozit has his own Agenda...himself. And he uses all of the above to achieve his goals. He makes you see the minute differences in Humans, particularly in the area of explaining the "unknown, and he uses them to create another social phenomonon that, as far as I know is unique to Humans...Hate....hate for no real, practical reason. Why? because he gets something out of it...personal gain.

In the history since we have created religion, evidence shows that there has been more bad than good from it. It is now 2010 AD...not 710 AD. But 200 years from now, historians could very well see this as another Dark Ages. Religion has prevented milestones in scientific research...stem-cell, just to name one example. We should be on Mars by now, but we aren't. Hell, we should be exploring Alpha-Centauri now, but we aren't. Can all of this be blamed for religion?...well, it's keeping us from all getting together for a common good...ourselves.
